Evolution, Not Revolution !
Revolution is defined as
'forcible overthrow of a government or social order'.
Altruism is not about forcing anyone to do anything.
If it replaces
capitalism, it will be because of a lot of small changes,
not a few big ones. Those changes will be individual changes of heart and mind,
as people make personal transitions into worlds of
abundance, not scarcity and a concerted effort to take more and more
of their actions out of
love, not fear.
The capitalist system certainly has many
unwanted consequences
for both human society and the
natural environment.
However it is the system that puts food on many people's plates.
Anti-capitalism is a protest movement, not a philosophy in itself -
people will not give up capitalism until they can see a better system.
People perceive a world of
scarcity, not of abundance
will consider talk of sharing to be hopelessly naive.
Until they witness others
giving things away they may be slow understand that a new world is here at last.
Similarly, those who have grown up in socially poor environments may be slow to
understand the power of community. However, each one of us, whatever our past, can choose to
transcend it and evolve to a higher plane of living and think altruistically.
Material advancement is not as important for the development of
altruism as global spiritual progress.
The disruption of an old-fashioned revolution hardly seems like
a sensible way to bring about either of these.
A better way to promote it is through a personal commitment to be a force for good,
not just in our own lives, but in the lives of those around us.
People cannot be forced to love others. They will not do so until they are ready.
Evolution - a gradual sequence of small changes - is a much more realistic
way to arrive at an altruistic society.
